Restoration at Old City Cemetery is handled by the Old City Cemetery Committee of the Washington County Historical Society in cooperation with the City of Sandersville.
The OCC Committee has been in existence since the early 1980s and has led several restoration and cleanup efforts over the years. Several notable accomplishments of the Committee are: listing of the cemetery on the National Register of Historic Places on August 3, 1987, building a historically inspired brick and iron fence around the five acre site, gaining state recognition for excellence in restoration by the Georgia Department of Historic Preservation via the Heritage Grant, and raising public awareness of the cemetery as a historic site and public park.
The current restoration and improvement efforts began in early 2006 when Glynda Giles Gerron volunteered to lead a subcommittee under the leadership of committee chair Sandra M. Willis to begin restoration of the rapidly deteriorating cemetery. Ms. Gerron's subcommittee began a new wave of cleanup and clearing away of debris and overgrown bushes. Eventually after several grants, local and in-kind donations, the cemetery is beginning to regain some of its former glory. Copings, monuments, trees, and countless other items have been restored or preserved since 2006.
There are many areas of the cemetery that need restoration and preservation, and today the committee continues this work in memory of Glynda Giles Gerron and Sandra Mercer Willis.
Make a donation to historic Old City Cemetery for it is in continuous need of maintenance and restoration. Donations are tax deductible and are always appreciated. You write the check payable to Old City Cemetery Committee and mail to:
